New Year’s Eve revellers were forced to crush together on Princes Bridge and along Swanston St until trains cleared the already packed Flinders St station platforms after midnight.
The party goers have had some help from the weather gods, with a cool change dropping the city’s temperature more than 10 degrees to a milder 27 degrees from a high of 39.7 in the afternoon.

The 24-hour public transport trial was put through its first major test on New Year’s Eve, with commuters giving it mixed reviews.

Following the fireworks which finished at 12.10am, some punters said the 20 minute wait between trains was too long.

A total of 10,000 tonnes of fireworks were launched from 17 rooftops and other sites through the night at the 9.30pm and midnight shows.

Police and paramedics were called into action within the chaotic Flinders St Station throughout the night.
